IP68 Industrial Connector for Mobile Robots in Demanding Environments
Mobile robots are moving beyond controlled factory floors. Autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), automated guided vehicles (AGVs), inspection robots and outdoor service platforms increasingly operate around production lines, warehouses, loading areas and industrial sites where dust, moisture, vibration and cable movement are part of normal operation.
For robot manufacturers and system integrators, these conditions create a practical challenge at every external cable interface. Sensors, cameras, motors, control modules and communication devices all depend on electrical connections that must remain properly protected while the robot is moving.
This is where an IP68 industrial connector can become an important part of the robot's electrical and mechanical design. The connector is not simply a component for joining two cables. It also forms part of the interface between the robot's protected electronics and the surrounding operating environment.
This application case examines how IP68 industrial connectors can be used in robotic equipment, with particular attention to environmental protection, vibration, cable movement, installation space and maintenance requirements.
Why Robot Applications Put Extra Stress on Cable Connections
A stationary industrial machine normally has fixed cable routes. A mobile robot is different. Its cables may move continuously as the platform drives, turns, lifts, rotates or interacts with other equipment.
Depending on the robot design, external cable connections may experience:
-
Continuous vibration during movement
-
Repeated cable bending
-
Mechanical pulling and tension
-
Dust from production or warehouse environments
-
Rain and moisture for outdoor robots
-
Temperature changes
-
Repeated connection and maintenance cycles
A connector selected only according to its electrical specifications may therefore not be sufficient for the complete application.
Robot engineers need to consider the electrical interface together with the cable routing, sealing structure, mechanical retention and installation environment.
Application Case: IP68 Industrial Connector on a Mobile Inspection Robot
Consider an autonomous inspection robot designed to move around an industrial facility. The robot carries cameras, sensors, communication equipment and control electronics. Some components are mounted inside the main enclosure, while sensors and external devices require cable connections outside the enclosure.
The robot may travel through areas where dust and moisture are present. It may also encounter vibration as it moves over uneven surfaces or operates near industrial machinery.
The engineering team therefore needs an external connector solution that can address several requirements at the same time:
-
Protection against dust and water ingress
-
Stable electrical or signal connection
-
Secure mating during movement
-
Suitable cable retention
-
Compatibility with the robot enclosure
-
Practical installation and servicing
An IP68 industrial connector can be evaluated for connection points where a high level of environmental protection is required.
What IP68 Means in a Robotic Application
IP68 is frequently specified for equipment that needs strong protection against dust and water ingress. For robotic equipment, this can be particularly relevant when connectors are mounted externally or positioned close to the floor.
However, an IP68 rating should always be interpreted according to the exact product specification and test conditions. It should not be treated as a universal guarantee for every possible installation environment.
The final sealing performance can depend on several factors, including:
-
The connector's sealing design
-
Compatible cable diameter
-
Correct assembly
-
Proper mating and locking
-
Condition of sealing components
-
Installation environment
For example, if the cable diameter does not fall within the specified sealing range, the connector may not achieve its intended sealing performance.
For this reason, buyers evaluating an IP68 connector for industrial robots should review the technical documentation for the exact model rather than selecting a product based only on the IP code.
Protection Against Dust and Moisture
Dust is not limited to heavy industrial processing areas. Manufacturing plants, warehouses and automated production environments can all contain airborne particles.
For mobile robots, the location of the connector is particularly important. A connection mounted close to the chassis or near the wheels can encounter more dust and debris than a connection positioned high inside a protected enclosure.
Moisture can create another challenge. Outdoor robots may encounter rain, while indoor equipment may be exposed to condensation, cleaning processes or wet production areas.
A properly specified waterproof industrial connector provides a defined sealing interface between the cable and equipment. This can help engineers manage environmental exposure at external connection points.
Nevertheless, connector protection should be considered together with the enclosure rating, cable construction and complete equipment design.
Vibration and Movement: A Key Consideration for Robots
Robot movement introduces mechanical conditions that are different from those found in stationary equipment.
As a mobile robot accelerates, stops or changes direction, the cable assembly can move relative to the enclosure. Repeated vibration can also place mechanical stress around the connector interface.
Secure Mating
The connector should remain properly mated under the operating conditions defined for the application. A locking mechanism can help maintain the connection after installation.
Threaded connectors, locking structures and other mating mechanisms may be suitable depending on the robot's design and maintenance requirements.
For an OEM project, engineers should evaluate the connector together with the expected vibration and movement profile instead of assuming that every locking connector provides the same mechanical performance.
Strain Relief
Cable strain relief is another important consideration.
When a cable is pulled or bent repeatedly, mechanical forces can be transferred toward the connector. A suitable strain relief structure helps manage these forces around the cable entry point.
Correct cable routing is equally important. The connector should not be used as the primary support point for a long or heavy cable assembly.
Where possible, the cable should be supported separately so that excessive weight, pulling or bending is not transferred directly to the connection.
Signal and Power Connections on Robotic Platforms
A modern robot may contain several types of electrical interfaces. Power cables may supply motors or actuators, while signal connections support sensors, cameras, control systems and communication modules.
The electrical requirements should therefore be defined before selecting an IP68 industrial connector.
Engineers should confirm:
-
Operating voltage
-
Operating current
-
Number of contacts
-
Signal or power application
-
Cable construction
-
Conductor size
-
Required environmental protection
For signal applications, additional electrical characteristics may need to be reviewed depending on the communication system and signal frequency.
A connector being waterproof does not automatically mean that it is suitable for every high-speed data or sensitive signal application. Electrical performance must be evaluated against the actual system requirements.
Cable Compatibility Is Part of Connector Selection
One of the most common practical issues during connector qualification is cable compatibility.
The cable outer diameter directly affects the sealing interface of many waterproof connector designs. The connector therefore needs to be matched to the cable being used in the robot.
Before ordering, the engineering team should provide the supplier with relevant cable information, including:
-
Outer cable diameter
-
Number of conductors
-
Conductor cross-section
-
Cable material
-
Required flexibility
-
Operating voltage and current
For mobile robots, cable flexibility can be particularly important because the cable may be subjected to repeated movement.
The connector itself may be mechanically robust, but the complete cable assembly still needs to be designed for the expected movement and bending conditions.
Panel Mounting and Robot Enclosure Design
Many robotic platforms use compact enclosures because available space is limited. This makes connector dimensions an important engineering consideration.
A panel-mounted connector needs to fit the enclosure while leaving enough room for internal cable routing.
Check These Dimensions Before Approval
-
Panel thickness
-
Mounting hole dimensions
-
Connector body diameter
-
Rear clearance
-
Cable bend radius
-
Spacing between adjacent connectors
A connector can fit the external panel but still create an installation problem if the rear section interferes with internal components.
For compact AMRs and inspection robots, this should be checked during the mechanical design stage rather than after the enclosure has already entered production.
Maintenance and Field Service Requirements
Robotic systems are often designed for continuous operation. When maintenance is required, technicians need to access sensors, cables and external modules without unnecessary disassembly.
This makes connector accessibility an important consideration.
For equipment integrators, useful questions include:
-
Can the connector be reached easily after installation?
-
Can a damaged cable be replaced without removing the entire enclosure?
-
Is the locking mechanism practical for service technicians?
-
Can the connection be repeatedly mated and unmated as required?
-
Is there enough clearance around the connector for maintenance?
These factors may have little influence on the initial unit price, but they can affect maintenance time over the robot's operating life.
Certification and Technical Documentation
Industrial robot manufacturers and European equipment integrators may require technical documentation during supplier qualification.
Where TUV certification is required by a project or customer specification, the certification documentation should be checked against the exact connector series and model being evaluated.
The same principle applies to IP ratings and other technical claims. Buyers should verify the applicable standard, product configuration and test conditions instead of assuming that a certification automatically covers every product in a manufacturer's portfolio.
For B2B procurement, model-specific documentation is particularly useful when comparing suppliers and preparing technical approval records.
How to Select an IP68 Industrial Connector for a Robot
1. Start With the Robot's Operating Environment
Determine whether the robot operates indoors, outdoors, in dusty production areas, around water or in a cleaning environment. The environment determines the required protection level.
2. Define the Electrical Interface
Specify voltage, current, contact quantity and whether the connection is intended for power, control signals, sensor signals or communication.
3. Match the Cable
Confirm cable diameter, conductor configuration and flexibility requirements. For waterproof applications, the cable must be compatible with the connector's specified sealing range.
4. Evaluate Movement and Vibration
Consider whether the cable will move continuously or experience vibration. Cable support and strain relief should be included in the mechanical design.
5. Check the Installation Space
Confirm mounting dimensions and rear clearance before approving the connector for the robot enclosure.
6. Consider Maintenance
Determine whether the connection needs to be serviced frequently or is intended as a long-term fixed connection. This can influence the preferred mating and locking structure.
7. Verify Product Documentation
Review the exact model's IP rating, electrical specifications, applicable certifications and test documentation before production approval.
Why Connector Selection Should Be Part of Robot Design
For robotic equipment, a connector is closely connected to several parts of the system design. The electrical interface determines whether the connector can handle the intended power or signal requirements. The mechanical design determines how the connector is mounted and how cable forces are managed. The environmental requirements determine the required protection level.
Separating these factors can lead to unnecessary redesign during production.
A better approach is to define the connector requirements during the robot's electrical and mechanical design stages. This gives engineers an opportunity to verify cable compatibility, enclosure dimensions, sealing requirements and maintenance access before the equipment enters mass production.
E-Weichat IP68 Industrial Connector Solutions
E-Weichat develops waterproof connector solutions for industrial equipment and demanding cable connection applications. Depending on the product series and exact model, waterproof connectors can be used for equipment requiring protection against environmental exposure, including industrial automation equipment and robotic systems.
For applications requiring IP68 industrial connectors, the exact model should be selected according to the cable dimensions, electrical requirements, installation structure and environmental conditions of the robot.
Where TUV certification or other specific approvals are required, the relevant documentation for the selected model should also be reviewed during the qualification process.
For robot OEMs, automation companies and system integrators, providing the actual application conditions allows the connector specification to be evaluated based on the complete connection requirement rather than a single parameter.
Conclusion
Robots operate in environments where cable connections can face much more movement and mechanical stress than conventional stationary equipment.
For applications exposed to dust and water, an IP68 industrial connector can provide a suitable level of environmental protection when the exact product specification matches the application.
However, IP protection is only one part of the selection process. Engineers should also evaluate cable compatibility, strain relief, vibration, locking structure, panel dimensions, signal or power requirements and maintenance access.
For industrial robot manufacturers and integrators, treating the connector as part of the complete equipment interface can make the design easier to qualify and maintain.
