Medical equipment depends on stable electrical and signal connections. From patient monitoring systems and diagnostic equipment to mobile medical devices and hospital equipment, cables often need to connect electronic modules while remaining protected from moisture, cleaning procedures, dust and repeated handling.
For equipment engineers, the connector is more than a simple interface between two cables. It can also become part of the equipment's environmental protection system. A poorly selected connector may create installation difficulties, expose the cable interface to contaminants or require unnecessary maintenance during the product's service life.
This is why an IP68 connector can be considered for medical equipment where a high level of protection against dust and water ingress is required.
However, selecting an IP68 connector for a medical application requires more than checking the IP rating. Engineers also need to consider cable compatibility, connector dimensions, sealing performance, cleaning conditions, mechanical stress, electrical requirements and the applicable documentation for the specific connector model.
Why Connector Protection Matters in Medical Equipment
Medical equipment is frequently used in environments where cleanliness and controlled maintenance are important. Depending on the equipment type, external surfaces and cable connections may be exposed to cleaning agents, disinfecting procedures, moisture, dust and repeated operator handling.
These conditions can be particularly relevant for equipment with external cable interfaces.
Examples include:

Medical automation and support equipment
In these applications, the connector may be located where the equipment enclosure meets the external cable. This makes environmental sealing and mechanical protection important considerations during the equipment design process.
An appropriately specified waterproof medical connector can help protect the connection interface when the application requires resistance to environmental exposure.
Application Case: IP68 Connector for a Mobile Patient Monitoring System
Consider a mobile patient monitoring system used in a hospital environment. The equipment contains a display, control electronics, communication modules and several external interfaces.
Because the equipment is moved between rooms, its cable connections may be repeatedly handled and repositioned. The equipment may also undergo routine surface cleaning and disinfection.
The engineering team therefore needs to evaluate the external connector according to several requirements:
-
Protection against moisture and accidental water exposure
-
Stable electrical or signal transmission
-
Secure cable connection during equipment movement
-
Suitable cable retention and strain relief
-
Compact installation dimensions
-
Compatibility with the equipment enclosure
-
Practical maintenance and replacement
An IP68 connector for medical equipment may be considered where the application requires a high level of dust and water-ingress protection.
The exact connector model, however, still needs to be evaluated against the equipment's actual operating and cleaning conditions.
What Does IP68 Mean for Medical Equipment?
IP68 is an Ingress Protection rating defined under the relevant IEC 60529 framework. The first digit relates to protection against solid foreign objects and dust, while the second digit relates to protection against water ingress under specified test conditions.
For equipment designers, the important point is that IP68 is a product-specific protection claim rather than a universal statement that a connector can withstand every medical environment.
The actual protection performance depends on factors such as:
-
Connector sealing structure
-
Correct mating of the connector
-
Cable outer diameter
-
Condition of sealing components
-
Correct assembly procedure
-
Installation orientation
-
Environmental conditions
For this reason, a buyer evaluating an IP68 waterproof connector should review the technical specification of the exact model instead of relying only on the IP code.
For E-Weichat products specified as IP68, the applicable protection rating should be verified against the exact product model and its documented test conditions.
Water and Cleaning Conditions in Medical Equipment
One of the reasons environmental protection is considered in medical equipment design is routine cleaning.
Medical equipment can be cleaned more frequently than many conventional industrial products. Depending on the application, equipment surfaces may be wiped, disinfected or exposed to controlled cleaning procedures.
This does not mean that an IP68 rating automatically confirms compatibility with every cleaning or disinfecting chemical.
Engineers should distinguish between water ingress protection and chemical compatibility.
If a connector will be exposed to a particular cleaning agent or disinfectant, the connector materials, sealing materials and cable jacket should be evaluated for compatibility with the specific chemical and exposure conditions.
This distinction is important when selecting a medical equipment waterproof connector. Water resistance and chemical resistance are separate technical considerations.
Cable Compatibility Is Critical for a Waterproof Connection
A waterproof connector cannot be evaluated independently from the cable installed with it.
The cable outer diameter is particularly important because the sealing mechanism needs to accommodate the specified cable size. Using a cable outside the connector's recommended range can compromise the intended sealing performance.
Before selecting an IP68 cable connector, the engineering team should provide information such as:
-
Cable outer diameter
-
Number of conductors
-
Conductor cross-section
-
Cable jacket material
-
Required flexibility
-
Operating voltage
-
Operating current
-
Signal or power application
For portable or mobile medical equipment, cable flexibility may also be important because the cable can be moved repeatedly during normal operation.
Why Cable Strain Relief Matters
Repeated cable movement can transfer mechanical force to the connector termination.
A suitable strain relief structure helps manage mechanical stress around the cable entry area. The connector should not, however, be treated as the sole support point for a heavy or long cable.
Where appropriate, the equipment design should provide additional cable support so that pulling and bending forces are not concentrated at the connector interface.
Signal Integrity in Medical Monitoring Equipment
Medical equipment may use connectors for both power and signal transmission.
Patient monitors, diagnostic equipment and sensor systems can contain multiple signal interfaces. Depending on the application, these connections may carry low-level sensor signals, control signals or data communication.
For this reason, waterproof performance should not be the only selection criterion.
Engineers should also review the connector's electrical specifications and determine whether they match the requirements of the intended signal system.
A connector being rated IP68 does not automatically mean it is suitable for every high-speed communication interface or sensitive signal application.
For a medical signal connector, the required contact configuration, voltage, current and applicable signal characteristics should be confirmed according to the actual equipment design.
Panel Mounting for Medical Equipment Enclosures
Many medical devices use compact enclosures with limited internal space. A panel-mounted connector therefore needs to satisfy both electrical and mechanical requirements.
During equipment design, engineers should check:
-
Panel thickness
-
Mounting hole dimensions
-
Connector body diameter
-
Rear connector clearance
-
Cable bend space
-
Distance between adjacent interfaces
This is particularly important for medical equipment with multiple external interfaces. A connector may fit the panel opening but still create problems if there is insufficient clearance behind the panel.
Checking the connector's complete mechanical envelope during the design stage can help prevent enclosure modifications later in the development process.
Mechanical Reliability During Repeated Equipment Handling
Some medical equipment remains stationary, while other systems are designed to move between rooms or workstations.
Mobile equipment may experience cable pulling, bending and vibration during transportation or operation.
The connector's mating structure should therefore be selected according to the expected mechanical conditions.
A secure locking structure can help maintain the connection after mating. The appropriate locking mechanism depends on the equipment architecture and whether the interface is intended for frequent service access or long-term installation.
For applications requiring repeated connection and disconnection, engineers should also consider the connector's intended mating-cycle performance and maintenance procedure.
Material Selection for Medical Equipment Connectors
Material selection becomes an important consideration when a connector is installed in equipment that is regularly cleaned or exposed to environmental conditions.
Depending on the connector construction, engineers may need to evaluate:
-
Housing material
-
Sealing material
-
Contact material and plating
-
Cable jacket compatibility
-
Temperature requirements
-
Resistance to the expected operating environment
There is no single connector material that is automatically suitable for every medical device.
The correct selection should be based on the actual application, cleaning procedure, temperature range and equipment requirements.
Certification and Documentation for Medical Equipment Projects
Medical equipment manufacturers typically require clear technical documentation during component evaluation and supplier qualification.
Depending on the project, buyers may request product specifications, test reports, material information and applicable certification documentation.
Where TUV certification is required, the certification should be checked against the exact connector series or model being evaluated.
Certification should not be assumed to apply to every product manufactured by the same supplier. Procurement and engineering teams should verify the applicable model, standard, certification scope and test conditions before using the connector in a qualified product design.
The same approach should be used when evaluating an IP68 claim. The product specification should clearly identify the applicable model and protection conditions.
How to Select an IP68 Connector for Medical Equipment
1. Define the Application Environment
First determine where the connector will be installed and what environmental exposure it will encounter. Indoor equipment, mobile equipment and equipment exposed to moisture may require different connector configurations.
2. Define the Electrical Requirements
Confirm voltage, current, contact quantity and whether the connector will be used for power, sensors, control signals or communication.
3. Confirm the Cable Specification
Provide the cable outer diameter, conductor configuration and cable material. For waterproof applications, the cable must fall within the connector's specified sealing range.
4. Determine the Required Protection Level
If protection against dust and water ingress is required, an IP68 connector may be considered where the exact product specification supports the intended application.
5. Evaluate Cleaning and Chemical Exposure
Identify the cleaning and disinfecting procedures used on the equipment. If chemical exposure is expected, evaluate the compatibility of connector and sealing materials with the specific chemicals involved.
6. Check Mechanical Requirements
Consider cable movement, strain relief, vibration, locking structure and expected connection cycles.
7. Check Panel and Enclosure Dimensions
Verify mounting dimensions and rear clearance before approving the connector for production.
8. Review Documentation
Confirm the applicable IP rating, electrical specifications, certification information and test documentation for the exact connector model.
IP68 Connector vs. Standard Connector for Medical Applications
The choice between a standard connector and an IP68 connector should be based on the actual equipment environment.
If a connector is installed completely inside a protected enclosure and has no meaningful exposure to moisture or contaminants, a high ingress-protection rating may not be necessary.
On the other hand, an external connection point may require additional environmental protection.
This is why the connector specification should follow the equipment design rather than simply selecting the highest available IP rating.
For equipment manufacturers, this approach can also help avoid unnecessary component costs and simplify product qualification.
Design Considerations for OEM Medical Equipment Manufacturers
OEM medical equipment manufacturers often need connectors that can be integrated consistently across multiple production units.
In this situation, connector selection should consider not only the prototype but also the production process.
Engineering teams should evaluate whether the connector can be assembled consistently, whether cable preparation is practical and whether operators can repeat the same installation procedure across production batches.
Procurement teams should also consider supply continuity, technical documentation and the availability of samples for design validation.
A connector that performs well during a prototype evaluation still needs to be suitable for the manufacturing process and the equipment's long-term service requirements.
Why the Connector Should Be Evaluated as Part of the Complete Device
An IP68 connector does not operate independently. Its performance is influenced by the cable, enclosure, installation method and surrounding environment.
For medical equipment, this system-level approach is particularly useful because the connector may be exposed to different conditions depending on its location.
A connector installed on the outside of a mobile device may face different mechanical and environmental conditions from one installed inside a stationary cabinet.
Therefore, connector selection should begin with the actual use case.
Engineers should define the environmental, electrical and mechanical requirements first and then identify the connector configuration that satisfies those requirements.
E-Weichat IP68 Connector Solutions
E-Weichat provides waterproof connector solutions for industrial and equipment applications where protected cable interfaces are required.
For medical equipment projects requiring an IP68 connector, the exact product model should be evaluated according to the equipment's cable specifications, electrical requirements, installation structure and environmental conditions.
Depending on the connector series and exact model, E-Weichat products can be considered for protected cable interfaces in equipment requiring resistance to environmental exposure. Where a specific IP68 rating or TUV certification is required, the applicable product documentation should be verified during the engineering qualification process.
For OEMs and system integrators, providing the complete application requirements at the beginning of the project can help determine the appropriate connector structure, cable range, mounting method and protection specification.
Conclusion
For medical equipment manufacturers, connector selection is closely related to the reliability and maintainability of the complete cable interface.
An IP68 connector can be a practical option for equipment where protection against dust and water ingress is required. However, IP68 should be treated as one part of the technical specification rather than the entire selection process.
Cable compatibility, strain relief, mechanical locking, cleaning conditions, material compatibility, panel dimensions and electrical performance should all be evaluated against the actual application.
For medical equipment OEMs, engineering teams and procurement specialists, selecting the connector during the early design stage allows these factors to be considered before tooling and mass production begin.
The result is a more application-specific connector solution rather than simply choosing a connector based on a single specification.
