The rollout of 5G technology requires a high density of small cells and base stations, many of which are located in harsh outdoor environments like urban rooftops or coastal poles. A major European telecommunications provider required a robust solution for field maintenance and data logging ports that could withstand 24/7 exposure to UV radiation, salt spray, and extreme rain.


Base station maintenance often requires technicians to connect diagnostic equipment via USB or Ethernet ports. Traditional ports on these units were frequently damaged by moisture or dust when the protective caps were improperly replaced. The client needed a waterproof USB 3.0 connector that maintained a seal even when the protective cap was removed, or at the very least, featured an integrated, un-losable cap system with a foolproof locking mechanism.


The Solution: Ruggedized IP68 Communication Series

We deployed our IP68 Waterproof USB 3.0 and M12 Circular Connector Series to provide a hardened interface for the 5G units.

  • Full Sealing: Our USB 3.0 connectors feature a screw-thread locking system that provides an airtight seal. Even in submerged conditions, the data integrity remains uncompromised.
  • UV and Corrosion Resistance: The connector housings are made from high-performance polymers designed to resist long-term UV exposure and salt-fog corrosion, typical of coastal 5G deployments.
  • Field Versatility: We provided field-wireable M12 connectors, allowing technicians to create custom-length cables on-site without specialized soldering tools, significantly increasing deployment speed.

  • The implementation of the IP68 series led to a 60% reduction in equipment failure related to connector corrosion. The "Field-Wireable" feature saved the client an estimated 20 hours of labor per base station site.
